Education Ministry orders probe into violent attack on Obuasi Sec Tech headteacher
The Ministry of Education has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent disturbances at Obuasi Senior High Technical School that left the headteacher injured and disrupted academic activities.
The incident occurred after some students allegedly attacked Headteacher Abdulai Zakaria over claims surrounding the alleged burial of a fetus on the school campus.
The fetus is said to have come from an abortion involving a student.
Mr Zakaria is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
"The Ministry considers this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such conduct has no place within Ghana's educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances," the Ministry said in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, and signed by Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak.
In response, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the matter and take disciplinary action against anyone found responsible.
"The Honourable Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately take up the matter, commence a full investigation into the disturbance, and apply the appropriate disciplinary sanctions against all persons found culpable," the statement added.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline and safety in schools and said it would continue working with the GES and other state institutions to ensure educational facilities remain secure environments for teaching and learning.
Meanwhile, police have deployed to the school to maintain order, while investigations into both the alleged assault and the circumstances surrounding the alleged fetus continue.
