Curious Minds joins National Youth Month clean-up exercise to advance Clean Green Wa campaign

Children and Youth in Broadcasting (Curious Minds) joined hundreds of young people in Wa on Friday, August 1, 2026, to participate in a voluntary clean-up exercise organised by the Upper West Regional Directorate of the National Youth Authority (NYA) as part of activities marking this year's National Youth Month celebration.

The exercise, undertaken in collaboration with the Wa Municipal Assembly, the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) and other youth-focused institutions, saw participants desilt choked gutters and clean markets, streets and the Youth Resource Centre to promote environmental sanitation in the regional capital.

The participation of Curious Minds formed part of its Clean Green Wa project, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable environmental sanitation practices and encouraging young people to take active responsibility for keeping their communities clean.

The Upper West Regional Coordinator of Curious Minds, Mr Philip Tengzu, who joined members of the organisation throughout the exercise, said the decision to participate was informed by the organisation's commitment to promoting environmental responsibility among children and young people through its Clean Green Wa project.

"This exercise aligns perfectly with the objectives of our Clean Green Wa project, which encourages young people to take responsibility for keeping their communities clean," he said.

Mr Tengzu noted that partnering the National Youth Authority for the clean-up exercise provided an opportunity for Curious Minds to reinforce the message that environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility and that young people have a critical role to play in building cleaner and healthier communities.

Speaking after the exercise, Curious Minds volunteer Umar Saeed Sidibe said the clean-up reflected the objectives of the Clean Green Wa project and demonstrated the importance of collective action in protecting the environment.

"It is a good call for every youth to be part of this programme," he said, explaining that poor waste disposal and choked drains had contributed to flooding incidents in parts of the country.

Mr Sidibe noted that the Clean Green Wa project seeks to promote healthy and clean communities and therefore aligned strongly with the objectives of the NYA-led initiative.

"If you have something that is good and you see somebody also projecting the same thing, the best thing is to help the person achieve it. At the end of the day, you all achieve your goal," he added.

The exercise brought together youth groups, school cadet corps, civil society organisations and volunteers from across the Upper West Region, reinforcing the role of young people in promoting civic responsibility and environmental stewardship.

The National Youth Authority said the clean-up formed part of activities under the 2026 National Youth Month celebration themed, "Rebuilding Values, Inspiring Patriotism: Empowering the Youth in the Digital Age," which seeks to promote volunteerism, patriotism and active citizenship among Ghanaian youth.

Through the Clean Green Wa project, Curious Minds engages children and young people in environmental advocacy and practical community action to support cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities across the Wa Municipality.
