Kaduna Governor gives new house, N10 million to husband of mob-killing victim Ummulkhairi

Nearly two months after his wife, Islamic teacher Ummulkhairi Usman Aliyu, was lynched and set ablaze by a mob in Maraban Jos, her husband, Aliyu Muhammad, says Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani has made good on his pledge of support providing the family with a new house and 10 million naira to help them rebuild their lives.

What was promised, and what was delivered
Malama Ummulkhairi, a mother of four, was killed in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area, on June 14, 2026, after a mob accused her of attempting to kidnap children an allegation her family and community members insisted was baseless. Her body was set ablaze before security operatives could restore calm, and the killing drew nationwide condemnation, including from Amnesty International, which described it as a "horrific mob killing."

Days after the incident, Governor Sani visited the bereaved family in Maraban Jos and pledged that his administration would take responsibility for the welfare of Aliyu Muhammad and the couple's four children, including sponsoring the children's education. That pledge has now been fulfilled: on Tuesday, August 4, Aliyu Muhammad, accompanied by Sheikh Haliru Maraya, paid a courtesy visit to the governor to formally express appreciation for the new home and financial support the family received.

In a Facebook post following the visit, Governor Sani wrote that his administration had "provided each family with a home, extended financial support to help them rebuild their lives, and assumed responsibility for the education of their children." The same visit saw the governor separately received Mrs Sarah Achi, widow of the late Venerable Edwin Achi, an Anglican priest who died in captivity after being abducted from his home in Chikun Local Government Area in October 2025 underlining that the housing and financial support scheme covers multiple families affected by violence across the state.

Accountability alongside compassion
The gesture comes against the backdrop of an ongoing prosecution. Following Ummulkhairi's killing, Kaduna State Police arrested and arraigned dozens of suspects, with the state government confirming that 41 people had been charged with culpable homicide and 30 others with unlawful assembly. Governor Sani also directed that the conduct of security personnel who responded to the incident, including the Divisional Police Officer for Maraban Jos, be investigated, after Aliyu Muhammad alleged that police had handed his wife over to the mob a claim the Kaduna Police Command has denied.

A wider policy of restitution
Governor Sani said the same philosophy had informed the state's distribution of 100 housing units to victims of banditry elsewhere in Kaduna State, framing the support to both the Achi and Aliyu families as part of a broader push to restore "hope, dignity and opportunities to victims of violence" through housing, education, healthcare and economic empowerment. He pledged continued collaboration with security agencies, traditional and religious leaders "to build a Kaduna that is safer, more peaceful and more inclusive for every citizen."
