Ghana Water Ltd announces three-day shutdown of Kpong-Tema pipelines for maintenance

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a temporary interruption in water supply to parts of the Greater Accra Region as it undertakes planned maintenance works on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.

The exercise, scheduled from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8, involves the replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines to improve the reliability of water supply.

The company said the maintenance forms part of its proactive infrastructure improvement programme aimed at preventing major pipeline failures and reducing water losses.

"Routine engineering assessments have identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated sections along the transmission pipelines that require urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures, reduce water losses and ensure reliable water supply," Ghana Water Ltd said in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4.

GWL explained that the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down during the exercise, while five sections of the transmission pipelines will be isolated for replacement.

The company said customers within the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience temporary interruptions in water supply and reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period.

Affected areas include parts of eastern Accra such as Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua and Teshie, as well as Kpong, Akuse, Somanya and Atimpoku.

"Ghana Water Ltd assures the public that its engineers and technical teams will work continuously throughout the three-day period to complete the replacement works within schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible," the statement noted.

The company urged affected customers to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the exercise and use available supplies judiciously during the maintenance period.
