Mahama presents replacement vehicles to retired Chief of Defence Staff and retired service commanders
President John Dramani Mahama has presented replacement vehicles to the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (Rtd), and former Service Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following the withdrawal of armoured vehicles previously allocated to them as part of their retirement package.
In a Facebook post on Monday, August 3, the Ghana Armed Forces announced that the retired military officers received Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles on behalf of the President from the current Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong.
The presentation ceremony was held at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra on Friday, July 31, 2026.
According to the GAF, the vehicles fulfil a commitment made by President Mahama after the earlier withdrawal of the armoured vehicles that had been allocated to the retired commanders.
The Armed Forces said the President's decision was intended to recognise the distinguished service and contributions of the retired military leaders to Ghana's peace, security and national development.
During the ceremony, Lieutenant General William Agyapong commended the retired commanders for their dedication and sacrifices throughout their military careers, describing their contributions as invaluable to the growth and professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces.
He also outlined ongoing initiatives by the military leadership to improve infrastructure, enhance personnel welfare and strengthen the operational readiness of the Armed Forces.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (Rtd), expressed gratitude to President Mahama for fulfilling his promise to provide replacement vehicles.
He said the gesture reflected the government's appreciation for the commitment and sacrifices of retired military personnel in safeguarding the country's security.
