Türkiye Captures Last Fugitive from the 2016 Marmaris Team That Tried to Kill Erdoğan

Nearly a decade after Turkish Special Forces linked to the Gülen movement stormed a hotel in the resort town of Marmaris hoping to seize or kill President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Türkiye's Interior Ministry has announced the capture of the last member of that 37-person team still at large.

Who Was Captured, and How
The suspect, identified by Turkish authorities by the initials B.K. and named in Turkish media as Burkay Karatepe, was a dismissed army captain and former military helicopter pilot who had been wanted for roughly ten years under an Interpol Red Notice. He was detained in the western province of Afyonkarahisar on 1 August 2026, following a coordinated intelligence operation run jointly by police intelligence units in Afyonkarahisar and the neighboring province of Eskişehir, under the direction of the General Directorate of Security's Intelligence Department. Counterterrorism officers in Afyonkarahisar carried out the actual detention once the joint operation had pinpointed his location.

The Interior Ministry described Karatepe as the final fugitive from the Special Forces unit that targeted the hotel where Erdoğan was staying on the night of 15 July 2016 the night the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETÖ), the movement authorities attribute to US-based cleric Fetullah Gülen, launched its failed coup attempt. That broader coup bid left more than 250 people dead and over 2,700 wounded, and the Marmaris raid specifically resulted in the deaths of two police officers guarding the president's location.

What the Marmaris Plot Involved
Testimony from figures convicted in the case has offered competing accounts of the unit's intent. Former Brigadier General Gökhan Şahin Sönmezateş, convicted over his role in the coup, has maintained that his team was ordered to detain Erdoğan rather than kill him, and has denied any Gülenist affiliation, claiming instead that senior commanders deceived and then abandoned the soldiers sent to Marmaris. A separate account from a former brigadier general alleged a more elaborate scheme: had the president been taken from the hotel by helicopter as planned, the plotters intended to fly him to an aircraft prepared to carry out his execution mid-flight, after which authorities would have been told he died attempting to flee the country. Whatever the precise chain of command and intent, Turkish prosecutors have treated the Marmaris operation as a targeted assassination attempt central to the broader coup case.

Why This Arrest Still Matters, Ten Years On
For Ankara, Karatepe's capture closes out, at least symbolically, one of the most sensitive case files from a coup attempt that continues to shape Turkish domestic politics and its diplomacy abroad, including its pursuit of Gülenist networks and affiliated institutions well beyond Turkish borders.

The Interior Ministry used the announcement to reaffirm its continued commitment to dismantling FETÖ's remaining structures, a campaign that has extended into diaspora communities, education networks and civil society organizations linked to the movement in multiple countries, including in parts of Africa where Turkish soft-power institutions and Gülen-linked schools have both operated.

That two Interpol Red Notices from this single case remained open for a decade also underscores how difficult it has proven for Turkish authorities to run down every participant in an operation that, at the time, involved dozens of active-duty military personnel dispersed quickly once the coup collapsed.
