Championing Children’s Smiles: Nunana Foundation Launches Historic Dental Outreach in Adidome
ADIDOME, VOLTA REGION — In a vibrant display of community care and health education, the Nunana Foundation has successfully launched its inaugural dental outreach campaign at the Globeserve Frauenshuh Preparatory School. The initiative brought vital oral health education and screenings to 50 enthusiastic kindergarten (KG2) and Class 1 pupils, marking the beginning of a transformative health journey for the children of Adidome.
Transforming Classrooms into Clinics
The Nunana Foundation was born out of a vision to bridge the gap in oral healthcare access for underserved children in Ghana. Driven by professional expertise and a deep love for country, the foundation mobilized a passionate local team to execute this high-impact event.
The dedicated deployment team driving this change includes:
- Mary Elisa Yaa Dunya — Founder & Lead Clinician (Practicing Dental Assistant, Denmark)
- Jonhild Dunya (Mama Africa) — Field Operations Director
- Samuel Jr. Dunya — Logistics Coordinator
- Joshua Dunya — Community Mobilization Lead
- Rachel Dube — Educational Program Coordinator
- Dziedzorm Akpalu — Communications & Media Liaison
- Ms. Vera — Student Welfare & Volunteer Supervisor
Together, this team turned a standard school day into an interactive, lifesaving health festival.
Fun, Games, and Bright Smiles
The outreach moved away from traditional, intimidating dental lectures, opting instead for interactive, child-friendly learning stations. The 50 young participants rotated through a series of engaging, hands-on educational activities:
- Nutritional Mapping: Pupils learned to identify teeth-friendly nutrition versus sugary foods that cause decay.
- Model Demonstrations: Children practiced proper brushing angles and strokes using oversized dental models.
- Laminated Card Exercises: A creative, interactive station where kids physically "brushed away" stains on laminated teeth illustrations.
- Clinical Screenings: Founder Mary Elisa Yaa Dunya personally conducted detailed dentition screenings for 20 of the pupils, identifying early signs of dental issues.
To ensure the lessons stuck, the foundation administered interactive questionnaires at the end of the session. The results were clear: every single child successfully grasped the core concepts of oral hygiene. To seal their new commitment to health, every participating student was gifted their own brand-new toothbrush and toothpaste to take home.
An Urgent Call for Grant Funding, Asset Donation, and Corporate Partnership
Sparing Rural Smiles: Why Ghanaian Financial Institutions and Global Donors Must Act Now
While the Nunana Foundation's first outreach was an undeniable success, it revealed a massive, unmet need in the Central Tongu District. Millions of children in rural Ghana lack access to basic dental care, leading to preventable infections, chronic pain, and missed school days.
To systematically address this crisis, the Nunana Foundation has established an immediate financial funding target of $12,500 (approximately GHS 195,000) for operational costs. More critically, the foundation is putting out a special appeal for the donation of a specialised, small mobile medical van fitted for dental outreach purposes to empower these energetic youngsters to reach deep, isolated communities safely.
The Mobile Dental Van Appeal: Reaching Beyond the Roadside
A major challenge uncovered during the outreach is that many families live far away from the main road networks. Traveling on foot with heavy educational materials, dental models, and medical supplies makes reaching remote areas incredibly difficult.
The foundation is urgently seeking an international or corporate donor to provide a small, rugged mobile medical van. This vehicle will be fitted for purpose, serving as a safe, clean, and mobile dental clinic on wheels. It will allow the team to store equipment securely and drive directly into rural school compounds, ensuring no child is left behind simply because of where they live.
Roadmap for the Next Phase: Upcoming Schools
With the mobile van and funding, the foundation has identified three critical public basic schools in and around Adidome where students are in urgent need of screening and oral hygiene packs:
- Adidome E.P. Primary School: A historic local public institution with a large student population that rarely receives specialized healthcare visits.
- Adidome D/A Global Basic School: A key public school serving children from underprivileged backgrounds in the central town area.
- Mafi Atitekpo D.A. Primary School: A remote village school located far off the main road, where children face extreme geographic barriers to reaching the nearest clinic.
Recommended Budget Allocation & Asset Breakdown
Every cedi, dollar, and asset secured will be strictly funneled into direct field operations:
- Special Asset Request (Mobile Medical Van): A compact, rugged van fitted with basic medical/dental cabinetry, power outlets for medical lights, and built-in water storage to serve as a mobile clinic for schools located far from main roads.
- Oral Hygiene Kits ($4,500 / GHS 70,000): Sourcing 2,500+ specialized child-sized toothbrushes, high-quality fluoride toothpastes, and educational brochures.
- Mobile Diagnostic Equipment ($5,000 / GHS 78,000): Acquisition of portable dental inspection lights, non-electric sterilizing kits, and anatomical teaching models for remote field use.
- Rural Logistics & Transport ($3,000 / GHS 47,000): Fuel, insurance, and maintenance to navigate difficult, unpaved road networks to reach isolated locations like Mafi Atitekpo.
The foundation is currently expanding its digital footprint, with its official website and communication infrastructure currently under development.
