2026 BECE: 'Results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools withheld' — WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

A press release issued by the Council on Wednesday said the results have been sent to schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Candidates can also access their results online through the Council's official website.

A total of 620,243 candidates took part in the examination. They comprised 304,415 males and 315,828 females from 20,789 participating schools across the country. The figure included 136 candidates with visual impairment, 282 candidates with hearing assessment needs and 510 candidates with other accommodation needs.

The examination was conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide. WAEC said 3,601 registered candidates were absent.

Following investigations into examination irregularities, the Council approved the cancellation of the subject results of 496 candidates and the cancellation of the entire results of 105 candidates. It also withheld the subject results for 119 candidates and the full results for 48 candidates.

In addition, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny. WAEC said the withheld results may either be released or cancelled after investigations are completed by August 31, 2026.

The Council advised candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld to visit its online irregularities portal to check the reasons for the action and obtain information on the next steps.

Heads of schools and proprietors can also use their results portal login details to check the status of their candidates' withheld results.

WAEC cautioned candidates, parents and the public to be wary of fraudsters who claim they can upgrade examination results for a fee. It stressed that BECE results are secure and can be authenticated.

The Council thanked the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, the security agencies, heads of schools, supervisors, invigilators, examiners and all stakeholders for their support in the successful conduct of the examination and the release of the results.
