Galamsey: Mpohor-Fiase DCE, Police Commander must be sentenced like Wontumi — Solomon Owusu
The National Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has called for the interdiction and prosecution of the District Chief Executive and the Police Commander of the Mpohor-Fiase District over alleged illegal mining activities taking place behind the District Police Command.
His call follows reports that galamsey operations are being carried out in close proximity to the police station, raising concerns about enforcement and oversight in the district.
In a social media post on Tuesday, July 28, Owusu argued that the two officials should face the same legal consequences as New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who was recently sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment over illegal mining-related offences.
"The galamsey happening right by the Police station at Mpohor Fiase must immediately cause the interdiction of the DCE of the area as well as the Police Commander," his post read.
According to him, the continued existence of illegal mining activities near the police command raises serious questions about the roles of the district's political and security leadership in tackling the menace.
The UP spokesperson contended that both officials should be removed from office pending investigations and prosecuted if found culpable.
"After their interdiction, they must be prosecuted and as was done to Wontumi same served to them. The President and his IGP must not slack at all. This is a fine opportunity to send another unserious characters to Nsawam," he wrote.
