No Real Alternative: Why Tinubu's Hand Was Forced on Shettima for 2027

When the All Progressives Congress formally submitted President Bola Tinubu's nomination papers in Abuja on July 10, 2026, with Vice President Kashim Shettima's name listed beside his for a second run, the party framed it as an easy, almost obvious choice a reward for loyalty and a signal of continuity. The truth is less tidy. Tinubu did not retain Shettima because the option was attractive. He retained him because, when the alternatives were actually weighed, none of them survived contact with Nigeria's political arithmetic.

For much of the past year, speculation ran hard in the opposite direction. Reports suggested Tinubu was seriously exploring a northern Christian running mate to soften the controversy that has trailed his Muslim-Muslim ticket since 2023, and to court a bloc of northern minority voters who broke decisively for Peter Obi in the last election. Presidency insiders, including a cabinet minister who publicly warned that dropping Shettima would gravely damage Tinubu's re-election chances, argued the opposite case throughout the year. The debate came to a head in January when Shettima's photograph was conspicuously missing from a banner at an APC event in Maiduguri, igniting fresh demands from North-Central party stakeholders for a Christian running mate. That the party spent months publicly relitigating a decision it ultimately reversed nothing on tells its own story about how contested the choice really was.

Why the "obvious" alternatives weren't
The case against swapping Shettima rests less on affection for him than on the thinness of the bench behind him. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the most frequently floated Muslim alternative, has spent the past two years hopping between the NNPP, a brief stop with the ADC, and now a running-mate slot alongside Obi on the NDC ticket a trajectory that has cost him credibility even in his home base of Kano, where he now faces a serious challenge from his own former protégé, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. A politician fighting to hold his own state is not a politician who can plausibly deliver the wider north. The northern governors occasionally mentioned as replacements fare no better: none commands the kind of cross-state political weight needed to move votes beyond his own patch, and elevating a lightweight from among them risks alienating northern power brokers without buying any compensating strength.

The Christian-north option carries its own trap, one more structural than tactical. Analysts have pointed out that Tinubu's political identity is rooted first in his Yoruba, southern-nationalist base his Muslim identity has always been the secondary, performed layer built for national coalition politics, not the core of his appeal. Swapping Shettima for a northern Christian would not, in that reading, produce a Muslim-Christian ticket at all; it would produce a Yoruba-Christian ticket, stripping away the specifically northern, Muslim anchor that Shettima's presence provides in the North-East and among the party's core Muslim constituency nationwide.

And the arithmetic gain is questionable in any case North-Central APC figures have argued that minority voters who backed Obi in 2023 over religious and regional grievances are unlikely to swing back to the APC simply because Shettima is removed, since Obi himself may again be on the ballot via the ADC coalition.

Continuity as necessity, not preference
What emerges from the two-year debate is less a story of Tinubu enthusiastically re-choosing his deputy than one of every exit ramp being closed off in turn. The presidency's own messaging around the retention leaned heavily on the language of loyalty, competence and continuity a framing that reads, on close inspection, as much a justification after the fact as a description of the original calculation. Shettima brings Borno State and North-East organizational depth that no available alternative can match, a working relationship inside government that avoids the disruption of introducing an untested deputy eighteen months from a general election, and a Muslim-Muslim configuration that, whatever its 2023 controversy, already produced a winning coalition once.

None of this makes the ticket popular in every quarter. The debate over religious representation in Nigeria's executive, and the argument that northern Christians remain structurally shut out of the country's top two offices since 1999, will not go away simply because the APC's nomination forms are filed. But for Tinubu specifically, heading into a contest where the opposition coalition around Obi remains the dominant threat to APC's northern minority vote, the political cost of disruption appears to have outweighed any theoretical gain from a fresh face. Retaining Shettima was not Tinubu's preferred move so much as his least damaging one which, in Nigerian coalition politics, often amounts to the same thing.
