Reflections on the UPSA Developers Hub's Participation in ICBMED 2026

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) continues to advance teaching, research, innovation and engagement with industry and society. Within the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies, the Department of Information Technology Studies supports this commitment by creating learning environments in which students apply computing knowledge to practical problems. These environments foster the technical competence, professional judgement and collaborative skills expected of contemporary computing graduates.

The UPSA Developers Hub, a Department-guided, student-led academic initiative, complements formal instruction through practice-oriented and project-based learning, collaborative software development, sustained academic mentorship, innovation and meaningful academic-industry engagement beyond the classroom. Within this complementary learning environment, students build on classroom learning by applying computing knowledge to practical challenges, strengthening problem-solving abilities, and developing the confidence and professional judgement required to contribute effectively in both scholarly and industry settings.

The participation of members of the UPSA Developers Hub in the International Conference on Business, Management, Economics and Development (ICBMED) 2026 reflected this educational philosophy. Hub members delivered eight presentations across several conference tracks. These comprised a paper on the educational model underpinning the UPSA Developers Hub and seven presentations on selected student computing projects that benefited from the Hub's academic support. The projects represented different origins, purposes and stages of development. Some were Hub-led initiatives, while others originated as final-year or interdisciplinary student projects. Each benefited from the Hub's environment of academic mentorship, collaborative learning and scholarly preparation.

ICBMED provided a multidisciplinary scholarly platform where students, academics and practitioners engaged with the projects from different disciplinary perspectives. The presentations created opportunities for dialogue, reflection and intellectual exchange. Questions and observations from participants drew attention to additional requirements, broader application contexts and possible directions for further development. The conference experience therefore connected project-based learning with scholarly engagement, demonstrating how multidisciplinary dialogue can contribute to the continued development of selected computing projects.

Recognising the Continuing Scholarly Potential of Selected Student Computing Projects

Student computing projects are primarily designed to demonstrate the attainment of programme learning outcomes and students' ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems. For many projects, formal assessment marks the completion of this educational purpose. Other projects display technical merit, originality, practical relevance or developmental promise that warrants further academic attention. Their continuing scholarly potential lies in the additional learning, inquiry and innovation that may emerge when suitable institutional support is available.

Realising this potential requires responsible academic stewardship. Universities can identify projects with sufficient quality, relevance and maturity for further development through careful evaluation of their technical foundations, limitations and supporting evidence. Accurate communication is equally important. Claims should remain proportionate to what each project has achieved. This approach safeguards academic integrity and helps students recognise that a software system can remain open to testing, refinement and further inquiry after its initial implementation.

The experience of the UPSA Developers Hub at ICBMED 2026 shows how multidisciplinary scholarly engagement can support this process. Presenting selected projects to academics and practitioners from different fields introduced perspectives beyond software implementation. Such engagement can reveal additional requirements, wider application possibilities and new directions for improvement. It also helps students examine their work more deeply and understand how computing solutions may be strengthened through insights from other disciplines.

A selective approach is essential because student projects differ in purpose, scope, maturity and intended outcome. Academically promising work may benefit from further mentorship, technical review and scholarly exposure. Other projects may appropriately conclude with assessment. Responsible pathways allow each project to be treated according to its merit and readiness while strengthening the relationship between teaching, research and innovation.

The continuing scholarly potential of selected student computing projects lies both in the systems produced and in the learning that can continue around them. Credible opportunities to explain, question and refine their work deepen students' intellectual development. They also promote disciplined reflection, better-informed improvement and a clearer understanding of how computing can respond to real-world needs.

Conclusion

The participation of the UPSA Developers Hub in ICBMED 2026 demonstrates how scholarly engagement can enrich computing education. Student computing projects primarily serve educational and assessment purposes. Selected projects with demonstrable merit can also generate further learning, inquiry and informed development through responsible academic stewardship.

The experience further highlights the value of multidisciplinary dialogue. Perspectives from different fields can broaden how computing projects are understood and improved. They can also reveal requirements and possibilities that may not emerge within a computing setting alone. Scholarly engagement therefore extends project-based learning by creating space for reflection, refinement and continued intellectual growth.

Universities seeking to strengthen experiential computing education may consider responsible pathways through which selected projects can receive further academic mentorship, technical review and scholarly engagement. Such pathways should remain selective, evidence-based and aligned with the purpose of student assessment. When a university creates an ecosystem in which a selected student computing project can continue generating learning, insight and practical value, should the award of a grade close its academic journey, or mark the beginning of responsible scholarly stewardship?

Dr. Augustina Dede Agor, PhD (Computer Science), is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Technology Studies at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). She has supervised and examined several undergraduate and postgraduate research projects in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, interdisciplinary computing and Business Management Studies across universities in Ghana. She instructs computing courses in Programming, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Systems Analysis and Design, Data Structures, Databases, Networking Development and Management, Multimedia Applications and Standards, Mobile Computing, Online Education Strategies and related areas of computing. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, optimisation and metaheuristics, computer networks and communications, biometrics, and cybersecurity. She has served as an editor and reviewer for several prominent international peer-reviewed journals in artificial intelligence, computer networks, information security and information technology. As Patron of the UPSA Developers Hub, she provides academic leadership and mentorship for an academic initiative that complements academic instruction through guided practice, collaborative software development and meaningful academic-industry engagement, thereby fostering scholarship and innovation beyond the classroom.
