Ukraine Strikes Russian Warship and Iran-Linked Cargo Vessels in Caspian Sea, Zelenskyy Says

Ukraine has extended its long-range strike campaign deep into Russian territory, hitting a Russian warship and vessels used to move Iran-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Saturday.
Writing on X, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had achieved strong results from long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, (The Jerusalem Post) though he did not disclose further operational details, such as the identity or extent of damage to the targeted ships.

Part of a wider Caspian campaign
The Caspian Sea, more than 1,000 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory, has become an increasingly active front in Kyiv's long-range strike operations. Ukraine first struck Russian naval assets there in late 2024, targeting the Caspian Flotilla's home port of Kaspiysk in Dagestan. Since then, Ukrainian forces often working with special operations units and local resistance networks have repeatedly hit vessels accused of ferrying drone components, missile parts, and ammunition between Iranian ports and Russian facilities in Astrakhan and Makhachkala, a supply route Kyiv says has helped sustain Russia's Shahed-drone production.

Previous strikes in the region have targeted specific sanctioned vessels, including the Composer Rakhmaninov and Askar-Sarydzha, and the cargo ship Port Olya-4, which Ukrainian intelligence says was sunk at the port of Olya while carrying Iranian-origin drone parts.

Broader offensive
Saturday's announcement comes amid an intensified Ukrainian campaign against Russian maritime and energy targets more broadly. In the past week alone, Kyiv's drone forces have reported hitting dozens of Russian vessels in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov including tankers and dry cargo ships as part of an effort to disrupt Moscow's war logistics and oil exports.

Russia has not yet commented on the reported Caspian Sea strike.
