Kasoa's NDC Meltdown: Leaked Audio, Sex Allegations, and a Party Divided

A leaked audio recording has plunged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency Kasoa into one of its most damaging internal crises since the party's 2024 election victory, pitting the constituency's grassroots against its own elected representative and party chairman.

What the Recording Allegedly Contains
At the centre of the storm is Constituency Chairman Stephen Ofosu Agyare, who is purported in the leaked audio to describe a past sexual relationship with the constituency's Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor. According to reporting on the recording, the chairman is heard making a blunt remark to the effect that a woman he had been intimate with could not intimidate him. A Rivalry With Deep Roots
This is not a scandal that erupted from nowhere. Party insiders trace the friction back to before the 2020 parliamentary primaries, when Agyare was reportedly among those who backed Okunor's ambitions to become the constituency's MP. Some of the chairman's supporters allege the relationship between the two went beyond politics before cooling once Okunor took office claims that, again, remain unverified and unconfirmed by either party.

Whatever its origins, the post-2024 period saw the fragile truce collapse. Chairman Agyare's camp began accusing the MP's husband, Yussif Yunusah, and his associates of trying to dominate constituency appointments, deepening mistrust on both sides. Tensions escalated further in January 2026, when Agyare filed a defamation suit against the constituency's Youth Organizer, his deputy, and six branch executives a sign of how far the internal rupture had already progressed before the audio leak.

The Women's Wing Pushes Back
When the recording surfaced, sections of the NDC Women's Wing organised protests in Kasoa, accusing the chairman of dragging the party into disrepute with comments they described as inappropriate toward a female party leader, and demanding his removal from office. Complications: Marriage Claims and a Market Contract

The saga has since widened well beyond the original leak. Alleged customary marriage documents connected to the MP's husband, Yussif Yunusah, began circulating on social media, adding a second front to an already volatile dispute claims that have not been independently authenticated. Legal practitioner Hafiz Saeed has publicly suggested the underlying dispute runs deeper than a rejected marriage proposal, though he did not offer independently verifiable detail.

Separately, NDC Central Regional Chairman Richard Kofi Asiedu alleged in a television interview that Chairman Agyare secured a roughly GH¢41 million contract to build one of the government's proposed 24-Hour Economy Market projects at Mankessim a claim that has triggered fresh questions about whether political influence shaped the award, and which the chairman has not publicly addressed.

A Cautionary Tale for the Governing Party

Whatever the truth of the underlying allegations, the Kasoa episode has become a case study in how unresolved intra-party rivalries over appointments, primaries, and personal loyalties can metastasise into a scandal that damages both individuals and the party's public standing. For the NDC's national leadership, the longer this dispute festers in public without an official position, the more it risks becoming a distraction ahead of future electoral contests in one of its most politically significant Central Region strongholds.
