'There Can't Be Two Captains on One Ship': Traoré Warns Challengers Amid Rumours of a Burkina Faso Power Struggle

Burkina Faso's military ruler, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has moved to shut down growing speculation of a rift within his own junta, telling community leaders in Ouahigouya, in the north of the country, on Thursday that he intends to remain the country's sole leader. "There can't be two captains on one ship," he said, adding a blunt warning to anyone in his circle: "Everyone who works with me knows how I operate. If anyone screws up, I'll take you down without a second thought. There are no strongmen around me."

The remarks were his most direct public response yet to weeks of rumour surrounding two of the junta's most powerful figures, both of whom have vanished from public view. The military government seized power in a coup in September 2022, and speculation about internal fractures has centred on Oumarou Yabré widely regarded as Burkina Faso's second-in-command, heading the intelligence services and the National Security Council and Farouk Azaria Sorgho, the junta's spokesman and commander of the Rapid Intervention Battalion No. 4 in Ouagadougou.

Yabré has not been seen publicly since late May, and a security official told AFP he has stopped reporting to his office at the National Intelligence Agency, with the security detail at his home substantially reduced. Reports of tension between Traoré and Yabré date back as far as 2023, though both men publicly denied them at the time. Two officials considered close to Yabré including the chief executive of the National Hydrocarbons Company and a ministerial adviser for youth affairs were dismissed by presidential decree on June 17.

Sorgho, the junta's high-profile third-ranking figure and a prominent voice in its anti-corruption campaign, has also not appeared publicly since mid-May. Some security officials allege he has been "abducted" by Traoré associates; his battalion has reportedly been run by a deputy since his disappearance. His father, Adama Luc Sorgho, who served as infrastructure minister until last year, was separately arrested and, according to his entourage, later "abducted" by armed men. Security operations in the capital have intensified over the past two months.

Traoré, 38, has led Burkina Faso since seizing power from fellow coup leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba less than eight months into Damiba's own rule a history that gives the current rumors added edge, given how the junta itself came to power. His government has centered its legitimacy on a nationalist, anti-Western posture and an intensified military campaign against jihadist insurgents linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, alongside deepening security ties with Russia's Africa Corps.

Whether Thursday's warning reflects a genuine consolidation of power or simply an attempt to project unity amid uncertainty, it confirms that speculation about the junta's internal cohesion has reached a level Traoré felt he could no longer ignore in public.
