Otumfuo calls for sustained vigilance from 'Black Maria' in tackling illicit drug peddling
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the Inspector-General of Police's (IGP's) Special Operations Team, the 'Black Maria', to be vigilant and sustain the momentum in the clampdown on illicit drug peddling and violent crimes in the country.
He said the escalation and sophistication of criminal activities across the country threatened and there was the need for the leadership of the team to devise effective strategies that could counter the activities of criminals.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu made the call, when the DCOP Osei-Akoto Arthur, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, led the leadership of the team to call on him at the Manhyia in Kumasi, on Thursday July 23, 2026
He exhorted the team to remain proactive, adapt swiftly and consistently stay ahead of criminal elements to ensure that communities were safe and protected.
“While you are breaking up hideouts today, others are plotting to set up more. Be vigilant, maintain the momentum, and together we can reduce violence and crime,” he said.
Otumfuo lauded the team for the work accomplished so far, noting the significant sacrifices, unwavering commitment, and exemplary professionalism they had demonstrated.
“I have received updates on your operations, the locations you have tackled, and the fact that over 100 people have been arrested. I appreciate your efforts. This is for Ghana,” he stated.
The Asantehene encouraged them to uphold their commitment, dedication, and passion.
Among the team leaders at the Manhyia Palace were Superintendent Augustine Dawson Amoah, ASP Frank Acquah, and ASP Emmanuel Abankwa.
DCOP Osei-Akoto said the team were making great strides in the Ashanti region by dismantling criminal rings and notorious criminal dens while arresting most of them.
