Bloggers Association calls for dialogue, due process and free expression after content creators' arrests

The Ghana Bloggers Association (GBA) has called on relevant authorities to ensure due process, transparency and the protection of constitutional rights following the recent arrests of some bloggers, digital content creators and social media personalities.

In a statement, the Association acknowledged the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to investigate allegations of criminal wrongdoing but stressed that all persons must be treated fairly and afforded their legal rights throughout any investigation or prosecution.

“The Ghana Bloggers Association recognizes the important role of law enforcement in investigating allegations of criminal conduct. At the same time, we believe that every individual is entitled to the protection of the law, including the right to due process, fair treatment, access to legal representation, and the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise,” the statement said.

The GBA said the arrests have generated concerns within Ghana’s digital content creation space about the need to balance law enforcement responsibilities with the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

The Association reiterated that freedom of expression remains a fundamental pillar of Ghana’s democracy but noted that the exercise of that right comes with responsibilities. It therefore urged bloggers, vloggers, TikTok creators, influencers and other online communicators to ensure that their content is accurate, respectful and consistent with the laws of Ghana.

It further called for stronger cooperation among state institutions, security agencies, media organisations, digital creators and civil society groups to build a safer and more responsible digital environment.

According to the GBA, education and continuous engagement should be prioritised in addressing misinformation, harmful online content and disputes arising from digital publications, rather than relying solely on punitive measures.

The Association also urged institutions involved in the investigations and legal processes to conduct their work in a transparent, professional manner and in strict accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.

Reaffirming its commitment to ethical digital journalism and responsible online communication, the GBA said it would continue to promote media literacy and equip content creators with knowledge of their rights and obligations.

“The Ghana Bloggers Association remains committed to supporting ethical digital journalism, promoting media literacy, and equipping content creators with knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities. We stand ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to strengthen Ghana's digital ecosystem while safeguarding democratic freedoms,” the statement concluded.
