Tema Police reject alleged GH¢150,000 bribe in suspected drug bust
The Tema Regional Police Command has revealed that its officers turned down an alleged GH¢150,000 bribe from a suspect who reportedly sought the release of a truck loaded with 5,039 compressed parcels of suspected narcotic substances intercepted during an anti-drug operation at Afienya.
The disclosure was made by the Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu, during a press briefing on Thursday, July 23, 2026, where he provided an update on recent anti-crime operations in the region.
DCOP Asiedu said the suspected narcotics were discovered in a tipper truck intercepted at Afienya following intelligence-led operations. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure and have since been remanded into custody.
According to him, one of the suspects later attempted to influence the investigation by offering police officers GH¢150,000 to secure the release of the truck and its cargo.
“Our officers rejected an alleged GH¢150,000 bribe offered by a suspect who sought the release of the truck carrying the suspected narcotic substances,” DCOP Asiedu stated.
He praised the officers for refusing the alleged inducement, describing their actions as a demonstration of the Ghana Police Service's commitment to integrity, professionalism and the fight against organised crime.
“The Tema Regional Police Command remains resolute, vigilant and fully committed to combating crime. We have strengthened intelligence gathering, patrols and collaboration with other security agencies. There will be no haven for criminals within this Region,” he said.
The 5,039 compressed parcels of suspected narcotic substances remain in police custody as investigations continue.
The Police Command said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals believed to be linked to the suspected drug trafficking network.
The disclosure formed part of a wider briefing by the Tema Regional Police Command on recent operations targeting armed robbery, drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime across the region.
