Manhunt in Sabon Zongo: Three Arrested After Mob Killing Over GH¢4,800 Theft Accusation in Kumasi
A theft accusation over GH¢4,800 has ended in a death, a manhunt, and now three arrests, after a mob attack at Sabon Zongo in Kumasi's Asokore Mampong Municipality left a 27-year-old man dead in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026.
What happened
According to police accounts, Yussif Zakari and another man, identified as Baaba Adamu, were accused by residents of stealing GH¢4,800 near a cattle kraal in Sabon Zongo. The two were apprehended by locals shortly after the alleged theft, and as word spread, an angry crowd gathered and set upon them. Zakari was severely beaten, sustaining multiple injuries. He was rushed first to the Manhyia Government Hospital before being referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In the immediate aftermath, police launched a manhunt for nine suspects believed to have taken part in the assault. That manhunt has now produced its first results.
The arrests
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed in a press release dated July 21 that three suspects had been arrested and arraigned in connection with the killing: Moses Adoko, 37, a plumber; Abubakari Adams, 25, a herdsman; and Nurudeen Suleman, 35, a motor mechanic. The three appeared before the Asokore Mampong District Court, presided over by Her Worship Mrs Hilder Esther Wryter, who remanded all three into police custody. They are scheduled to reappear in court on August 7, 2026. Investigations into the remaining suspects are understood to be ongoing.
A neighbourhood already under strain
The lynching adds to a difficult recent stretch for the Asawase area of Kumasi, which has seen a cluster of violent incidents in and around Sabon Zongo. Separately, police in the Manhyia District which covers Asawase carried out an intelligence-led operation at Asawase Market on July 21, 2026, arresting two men, Osman Bassein, 37, and Mohammed Abdul-Razak, 38, after intercepting roughly 100 compressed parcels of suspected narcotic drugs concealed inside fertilizer sacks. That operation, conducted jointly by the Manhyia Divisional CID and the Zongo Police Station, points to a wider pattern of criminal activity from drug trafficking to vigilante violence that security agencies in the area are now confronting on multiple fronts simultaneously.
Why mob justice persists
Incidents like the Sabon Zongo lynching reflect a recurring and troubling dynamic in parts of urban Ghana, where communities frustrated by theft and a perceived slowness of formal justice resort to immediate, often fatal, self-administered punishment.
Ghanaian law is unambiguous on this point: mob action resulting in death constitutes murder or manslaughter regardless of the underlying accusation, and the swift arraignment of the three suspects signals that police intend to pursue the case as such. But arrests alone rarely address the underlying grievance a sense, real or perceived, that formal policing and the courts are too slow or too weak to deter theft in the first place.
What to watch
The coming weeks will test two things: whether police can locate and arrest the remaining six suspects still at large, and how the Asokore Mampong District Court proceeds with the case against the three now in custody when they reappear on August 7. For a neighborhood already on edge from a string of violent incidents, how this case is handled and how visibly may shape whether residents place greater trust in formal law enforcement, or continue to see street justice as their only recourse.
