KMA reports Police Officer over alleged gun threat during vehicle towing dispute
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has reported a police officer to the Ghana Police Service for investigation following allegations that he threatened workers of a towing company with a firearm during a confrontation over the removal of an illegally parked vehicle.
The Assembly, in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, said the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, at Roman Hill in Kumasi's Central Business District.
According to the KMA, personnel of Day and Night Towing Service, a company engaged by the Assembly to remove vehicles parked in unauthorised areas, had clamped a saloon car and were preparing to tow it away when a uniformed police officer, identified as Y.E. Aboagye, arrived and claimed ownership of the vehicle.
The Assembly said the officer challenged the authority of the towing team to impound the vehicle, resulting in a heated exchange between the parties.
It alleged that during the confrontation, the officer threatened to shoot one of the towing personnel in the foot if they continued with the towing exercise.
The KMA described the incident as "unfortunate and highly avoidable" and said it had formally referred the matter to the Ghana Police Service for the necessary investigations and action.
The Assembly further clarified that the incident had no connection with its Security Taskforce and urged the public to disregard social media claims suggesting otherwise.
“The public is therefore urged to disregard any false information linking the said video to the KMA Security Taskforce,” the statement said.
