German Foreign Minister Wadephul Meets Young Nigerians in Lagos, Hails Nigeria as Key Energy Partner

Germany's Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, visited Nigeria on 21 and 22 July 2026, holding high-level talks in Abuja and Lagos as part of a three-nation African tour that also took him to Mauritania and South Africa. It was his third visit to the continent this year.

In Abuja, Wadephul held bilateral consultations with Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to a statement from Nigeria's foreign ministry, the discussions covered economic cooperation, security, sustainable development, and a shared commitment to regional and global peace. Both ministers also reviewed progress on existing bilateral agreements between the two countries. Wadephul separately met with Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, to discuss regional developments and West African cooperation.

The Lagos leg of the visit focused on economic and cultural ties. Wadephul was accompanied by a delegation of German parliamentarians and senior executives from German companies in the information technology and energy sectors. He took part in a business roundtable with representatives of German and Nigerian companies, aimed at exploring new opportunities for trade and investment. He also met with civil society groups, cultural practitioners, and a group of young Nigerian influencers, in what Germany's Federal Foreign Office described as an effort to hear directly from the country's youth on how they want the Europe-Africa partnership to develop.

Speaking at a networking reception hosted by the German Embassy in Lagos, Wadephul described Nigeria as one of Europe's most important jet fuel suppliers, noting that in the first half of 2026 Nigeria had become a key source of jet fuel for European markets. He said Germany remained committed to expanding cooperation with Nigeria in trade, investment, security and renewable energy, calling the country one of Germany's most important partners on the continent.

The visit builds on the German-Nigerian Binational Commission, established in 2011, which provides a framework for cooperation across the economy, energy, foreign and security policy, culture, migration and police cooperation. Germany's Federal Foreign Office said the trip reflected Berlin's wider effort to deepen engagement with Africa's young populations, noting that Wadephul held similar conversations with youth during the Mauritania and South Africa legs of his tour.

The visit comes as Germany and its European partners continue to look for new footholds on the continent amid declining Western influence in the Sahel, where Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have moved closer to Russia following military takeovers in each country. Officials in both Abuja and Berlin described the Wadephul visit as part of a longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Germany, built on mutual respect, shared democratic values and economic cooperation.
