Ossoff Presses Hegseth Over Iran 'Combat Ineffective' Claims

Senator Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday over past claims that Iran's military had been "destroyed" and rendered "combat ineffective," pressing him repeatedly on whether those statements were accurate as US operations against Iran continue nearly five months later.

Testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Hegseth faced questions over remarks he made on what Ossoff called "day 14" of the conflict, when the secretary declared Iran's military had been "destroyed" and "made combat ineffective." Ossoff asked Hegseth directly, three times, whether that statement was accurate yes or no.

Hegseth did not give a direct answer. Instead, he argued that Iran's navy "didn't have a navy any longer... it was completely sunk," that its missile stockpiles were buried in underground facilities, and that its defense industrial base had been "almost completely destroyed," while conceding this did not mean the country's capability had been reduced to "absolute zero."

Ossoff also cited Hegseth's later claim, three weeks after the "day 14" assessment, that "Operation Epic Fury was a historic and overwhelming victory," that Iran's military had been rendered "combat-ineffective for years to come," and that the US had "achieved every single objective." Asked again whether those statements were accurate, Hegseth maintained it was, on behalf of US service members, "a historic military victory over Iran."

Pressed further on whether Iran's military had in fact remained combat-ineffective in the four months since, Hegseth said the country's forces had been set back "not just years, but likely decades."

The hearing came as Hegseth told lawmakers the war has cost approximately $37.5 billion to date, with the Pentagon requesting tens of billions more in emergency funding figures reported at between $70 billion and $80 billion even as the conflict, which began at the end of February, shows no clear end date.

Other senators used the hearing to challenge the administration's Iran strategy. Senator Patty Murray warned against "another forever war," while Senator Gary Peters called the current approach a failure. The session was also interrupted by protesters objecting to continued strikes in Iran and Gaza before order was restored.

Ossoff ultimately moved on without receiving a direct yes-or-no answer from Hegseth on whether his earlier claims about Iran's military had been truthful.
