Three critically injured as trailer crashes into eight vehicles at Asokwa overpass
Three people sustained critical injuries after a fully loaded trailer reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into eight vehicles at the Asokwa Overpass in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, causing major traffic congestion as the wrecked vehicles blocked sections of the busy Asokwa-Ahodwo road.
Eyewitnesses said the trailer was travelling from Anloga Junction towards the Ahodwo Roundabout when it reportedly developed a mechanical fault, lost control and ploughed into vehicles that were caught in traffic.
The vehicles involved in the collision included a Toyota Santa Fe, Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla, Nissan SUV, Kia Morning, Toyota pickup, Mitsubishi saloon car and the trailer.
One of the victims, Kwame Mensah, who was driving the Toyota Santa Fe, said the trailer slammed into his vehicle and pushed it for several metres before finally coming to a halt.
According to him, the force of the impact caused his vehicle to crash into another vehicle ahead, setting off a chain-reaction collision involving several other vehicles.
“All I saw was the trailer pushing my car. My vehicle then rammed into the one in front, which also hit another vehicle, creating a chain collision,” he recounted.
Mr Mensah said the trailer was eventually brought to a stop after crashing into a streetlight pole, a development he believes prevented a more serious disaster.
He added that although no fatalities were recorded, two of the five occupants in his vehicle, together with a roadside hawker, sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service visited the scene and have begun investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
As of the time of filing this report, the damaged vehicles had not been removed from the road, resulting in heavy traffic congestion along the Asokwa-Ahodwo stretch.
