My Take On Chairman Wontumi's 20-Year Sentence; A Huge Blow To The Npp

I write this important piece with deep discontent and disappointment at the news of Chairman Wontumi’s sentencing to 20 years with hard labour.

To say I'm appalled and scandalized will be an understatement considering the ill treatment meted out to him throughout the trial.

In all fairness, I describe Chairman Wontimi's current circumstance as a:

A POLITICAL TARGETING, NOT JUSTICE

As we all know, this sentencing comes as no surprise considering the posture of the current NDC administration led by President John Dramani Mahama and his cohorts.

In fact, in the weeks leading up to this, we heard leading NDC figures make prejudicial comments on this case in the media, and their words have now come to pass.

Given the above scenario, it is apparently clear that Chairman Wontumi was a target of this clueless NDC administration.

Under normal circumstances, and in a democracy that respects the rule of law and due process, Chairman Wontumi should not have been subjected to this cruel and politically motivated treatment.

Fast forward, no one can deny the fact that Chairman Wontumi's current predicaments will be;

A HUGE LOSS TO THE NPP

Let’s be clear, Chairman Wontumi’s contributions, impact, and support to the NPP are immeasurable, taking into consideration his role in the Ashanti Region and every corner of Ghana. He has been a mobilizer, a financier, a voice, and a backbone of the Party in difficult times. He stood tall when many were quiet.

Undoubtedly, to jail him for 20 years is not just an attack on one man; it is a huge blow to the NPP and an attempt to silence one of our strongest voices and intimidate Party faithful across the Country.

In this situation, what it means for us as a Party is to unite without fear, and in a moment that calls for strategy, to speak up and boldly defend our own moving forward.

To the NDC: You may jail a man, but you cannot jail an ideology. You may silence a voice, but you cannot silence millions of NPP members.

To my fellow NPP members: Let this energize us, not break us. Chairman Wontumi has suffered for the Party. Now it is our turn to stand for him and for the Party.

In conclusion, I condemn this sentencing in the strongest terms and call on our Party leadership to ensure justice is truly served through the appropriate appeals process.

To Chairman Wontumi, we stand with you in this trying moment, and the NPP will survive and bounce back stronger.

Long live NPP!
