Four Abuja policemen detained for extorting ₦53,000 (about $38) from Nigeria's anti-corruption chief at illegal checkpoint
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command in Abuja has confirmed the arrest and detention of four of its officers accused of unlawfully stopping and extorting the Chairman of Nigeria's Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Dr Musa Aliyu (SAN), forcing him to hand over ₦53,000, roughly 38 US dollars, at an illegal checkpoint they had mounted without authorization.
How the extortion happened
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, told journalists in Abuja on Monday that preliminary investigations showed the officers had abandoned their assigned duty posts and converged around the Banex area of Wuse, where they set up an unauthorized stop-and-search checkpoint targeting motorists. Unaware of the identity of the driver they had flagged down, the officers reportedly intercepted Aliyu and pressured him into finding cash on the spot.
He was taken to a nearby Point of Sale operator, where he withdrew ₦53,000, an amount worth about $38 at the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market rate of roughly ₦1,380 to the dollar as of Monday, paid the transaction charges himself, and handed the money over. The officers then allegedly shared the proceeds among themselves before fleeing the scene.
Commissioner condemns officers as "thieves"
Sanusi did not mince words in describing the conduct of his own men, calling them thieves and criminals with no place in the Nigeria Police Force. He said the command had declared the officers wanted after the incident came to light, and that the arrest of the gang's alleged leader led investigators to the remaining three. All four are now in custody and facing an orderly room trial, with the possibility of dismissal should they be found culpable.
The commissioner said the checkpoint the officers mounted was entirely unauthorized, describing them as a gang of colleagues who had left their respective divisions, clustered together, and moved to Wuse Banex specifically to extort money from unsuspecting motorists before fleeing.
A case that exposes a wider pattern
The irony of the case, that Nigeria's top anti-graft official became a victim of extortion by the very security agency meant to help enforce law and order, has drawn wide attention across Nigerian media. Sanusi sought to reassure residents of the capital that the command would continue identifying, investigating and punishing officers involved in extortion, illegal checkpoints and related misconduct, insisting that corrupt personnel would not be tolerated within the force.
The episode nonetheless lands at an awkward moment for Nigerian law enforcement, coming as the ICPC itself is pursuing a separate high-profile prosecution involving the alleged diversion of tens of millions of naira in government funds, underscoring how deeply entrenched extortion and petty corruption remain within some rank-and-file police units even as the country's institutions push to prosecute graft at the highest levels.
