Registrar of Companies urges businesses to strengthen corporate governance for growth and investor confidence

The Registrar of Companies, Maame Samma Peprah Esq., has called on businesses to strengthen corporate governance by promoting transparency, accountability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

She stated that these principles are essential for attracting investment and driving sustainable economic growth.

She made the call at the inaugural Company Secretaries' Summit and Awards 2026 in Accra.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Madam Peprah said Ghana's ambition to become a preferred investment destination depends on the ability of businesses to uphold high governance standards.

"As Ghana positions itself as a preferred investment destination, businesses must embrace transparency, accountability and compliance to remain competitive in an evolving global economy," she said.

Madam Peprah said effective corporate governance builds investor confidence, promotes responsible leadership and creates a stable environment for business growth.

She described company secretaries as an indispensable link between regulators, boards of directors and management, adding that their responsibilities have expanded considerably in recent years.

"The Company Secretary is no longer confined to statutory compliance. Today's governance professional provides strategic governance advice, manages governance risks, promotes ethical leadership and serves as a trusted adviser to the board," she said.

According to the Registrar, the changing regulatory and business environment requires governance professionals to anticipate emerging risks and help organisations respond effectively to evolving legal and regulatory obligations.

"Our organisations need governance professionals who can support sound board decisions, strengthen accountability systems and help institutions adapt to changing governance expectations," she said.

She also urged company secretaries and governance practitioners to invest in continuous learning and adopt technology to improve governance practices.

"I encourage every governance professional to pursue continuous professional development, embrace innovation and leverage technology to strengthen governance standards. These are the qualities that will help build resilient, accountable and sustainable organisations," she said.

Madam Peprah affirmed the Office of the Registrar of Companies' commitment to working with professional bodies, governance institutions and the private sector to improve regulatory compliance and strengthen Ghana's corporate governance framework.

She said the collaboration would help create a business environment that promotes responsible corporate conduct, supports enterprise growth and contributes to national economic development.
