Retired Supreme Court Judge Questions Omission Of Dr. Zanetor Rawlings From NDC Government Appointments
The decision by the current NDC government not to appoint Dr. Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings to a role in government has become a subject of public discussion after retired Supreme Court Judge Raymond Atuguba raised questions about the omission.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday during the Justice D.F. Annan Memorial Lecture, Justice Atuguba said the absence of Dr. Rawlings from government raises concerns about how the party is rewarding loyalty, competence, and legacy.
“Dr. Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings has served, and continues to serve, with distinction. She won Korle Klottey and has held it through hard work. She has shown commitment to the people, and she carries the values that many Ghanaians associate with her father,” Justice Atuguba stated.
A Record of Service in Korle Klottey
Dr. Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings is the first daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman‑Rawlings. She is the Member of Parliament for the Korle Klottey Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Since entering Parliament, she has been visible in constituency work. Residents point to her consistent engagement with health initiatives, education support, and community programs. She has won the seat several times, each time defending it through grassroots mobilization.
Political watchers describe her class as accessible. Many who have never met her personally say they admire her for what they call her appealing nature and calm public presence.
Carrying Forward Foundational Values
Justice Atuguba linked the discussion to the founding principles of the NDC.
“She is still carrying the values of her father: probity, accountability, and social justice. These are not just slogans. They are the things people expect from this government,” he said.
For many in the party’s base, the Rawlings name remains symbolic. President Jerry Rawlings is remembered for leading the NDC’s formation and for his emphasis on transparency and service. Nana Konadu Rawlings is also recognized for her work in women’s advocacy and party organization.
Supporters argue that Dr. Zanetor’s inclusion in government would signal continuity with those ideals.
The Appointment Conversation
The NDC government has made several appointments since assuming office, drawing from MPs, technocrats, and party stalwarts across the country. The list has sparked debate in some quarters about balance, experience, and regional representation.
Justice Atuguba did not call for any specific position. His point, he said, was about recognition.
“When someone has worked tirelessly for the party and for the people, and continues to do so, the question naturally comes: why is she not part of the team serving in government right now?”
He added that the question is not about entitlement, but about utilizing experience that resonates with voters.
Looking Ahead
The discussion reflects a broader conversation within the NDC about how to blend new leadership with the party’s history.
Whether Dr. Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings receives an appointment later in the government’s term remains to be seen. For now, the question raised by Justice Atuguba has put her record — and the values she represents — back in the public conversation.
As one Korle Klottey resident put it: “She shows up. People see her. That’s why the question is being asked.”brief.
