ACCRA-KUMASI EXPRESSWAY: An Ambitious but Achievable National Project
F Ghana's proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway has the potential to become one of the country's most transformative infrastructure projects, promising to reshape transportation, trade, and economic activity along one of West Africa's busiest road corridors.
The planned 240-kilometre four-lane dual carriageway is expected to reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from more than four hours to less than two, significantly improving the movement of people and goods between Ghana's two largest commercial centres.
Beyond shorter travel times, the expressway is expected to improve road safety, reduce congestion on the existing highway, and stimulate economic growth across multiple sectors. For years, the current Accra-Kumasi road has been one of the country's busiest transport routes, carrying thousands of passengers and large volumes of freight daily while recording numerous fatal accidents and costly traffic delays.
A modern expressway would provide substantial benefits for agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and commerce. Farmers in the middle belt would be able to transport fresh produce to urban markets more quickly, reducing post-harvest losses. Businesses would benefit from lower transport costs, reduced fuel consumption, and improved vehicle efficiency, while investors would gain greater confidence in Ghana's transport infrastructure.
Although the project is ambitious and will require significant financial resources, engineering expertise, and careful land acquisition, it remains an achievable undertaking. Several countries with comparable economic conditions have successfully delivered major highway projects through strong political commitment, transparent procurement systems, effective project management, and rigorous quality control.
For Ghana, the challenge will be maintaining discipline throughout every stage of implementation—from financing and construction to monitoring and long-term maintenance. Effective oversight and accountability will be essential to ensure the project is completed on schedule and delivers value for money.
The reported involvement of the Ghana Armed Forces in supervising aspects of the preparatory and early implementation stages has attracted public attention and deserves recognition. The Armed Forces have established a reputation for professionalism, discipline, and organisational efficiency in supporting national development initiatives.
Their participation can strengthen project implementation in several ways. Military engineering and logistics units are known for adhering to timelines and maintaining high operational standards. Their presence can also help safeguard construction equipment, materials, and project sites from theft, vandalism, and encroachment, while reinforcing accountability and protecting the broader national interest.
The Ghana Armed Forces have previously demonstrated their capacity to contribute to national development through engineering projects, disaster response operations, public health interventions, and emergency logistics. Their experience in supporting major national programmes provides valuable expertise that can complement the work of civilian agencies on a project of this scale.
As construction progresses, several priorities will be critical to the project's success. Government and its financing partners must ensure adequate and sustained funding to prevent costly delays. Landowners and communities affected by the project should receive fair and timely compensation. Strict quality assurance measures must be enforced throughout construction to guarantee the road's durability and safety, while regular public updates will help build confidence, promote transparency, and keep citizens informed of progress.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is more than a road project; it is a strategic investment in Ghana's future. By improving connectivity between the country's principal economic centres, it has the potential to boost productivity, facilitate regional trade, attract investment, and strengthen national competitiveness.
With sound leadership, adequate financing, transparent governance, and effective supervision, the vision of a modern Accra-Kumasi Expressway can become a reality. Successfully delivering the project would not only transform transportation but also create lasting economic benefits for generations of Ghanaians.
