Police arrest suspected murderer in Obuasi; hunt for accomplices continues
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Seidu Masawudu, popularly known as Marshall, over the alleged murder of Abdul Jabal Suleman at Abompe New Site, a suburb of Obuasi.
The suspect was apprehended at Soe in the Bongo District near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region during an intelligence-led operation by the police. His 22-year-old girlfriend, who hails from Tweapease near Obuasi, was also arrested during the operation.
Briefing the media, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, said Marshall had been declared wanted by the Obuasi Police Command in connection with the fatal attack, which occurred on July 9, 2026.
According to the Regional Commander, police received a distress call at about 2:20 a.m. on the day of the incident, reporting that a group of young men allegedly led by Marshall, armed with a firearm and cutlasses, had attacked Abdul Jabal Suleman and inflicted multiple injuries on him.
A police team was immediately dispatched to the scene, but the suspects had fled before officers arrived. The victim was rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
DCOP Nyaaba said investigations later revealed that the suspect had fled to the Bongo area, leading to an intelligence-led operation that culminated in his arrest on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the killing and identified several other individuals he claimed participated in the attack. The police named them as Happy Bowmin, also known as Oboy, Mallam Karim, Malik, Balanga, Basit, Nazir, Nuhu and Jedus, also known as Baron.
Preliminary investigations suggest the murder was linked to a rivalry between criminal gangs.
The police said efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects and assured the public that all those involved in the incident would be brought to justice.
Seidu Masawudu is expected to be arraigned before court as investigations continue.
DCOP Nyaaba reaffirmed the Police Service's commitment to protecting lives and property in the Ashanti South Region, warning that the area would not serve as a refuge for criminals.
