'If you have evidence, take Dennis Miracles Aboagye to court' – Russian NPP Chairman tells EOCO
The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Russia Branch, Dr. Ajene Abongo Mashood, has questioned the decision by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to detain former government communications aide Denis Miracles Aboagye, insisting that anyone accused of wrongdoing should be taken before the court if authorities have evidence against him.
Reacting to the arrest and subsequent investigations involving Mr. Aboagye, Dr. Mashood wrote:
"Look at this? Why do you have to detain him? If you that have the evidence, just take him to court and the law will take its course.”
Mr. Aboagye, an aide to the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was arrested by EOCO following investigations into alleged financial and procurement-related offences. EOCO has stated that the investigations involve suspected offences including conspiracy, stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering and other related matters.
The arrest triggered reactions from some members and supporters of the NPP, with concerns raised about the circumstances surrounding his detention and access to legal representation.
Following the investigations, Denis Miracles Aboagye was granted bail with a GH¢50 million bond and three sureties.
EOCO has maintained that its actions are part of lawful investigations and that the rights of persons under investigation are being respected. The office has also indicated that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Dr. Mashood’s comments add to growing debate over the balance between law enforcement agencies conducting investigations and ensuring that suspects’ constitutional rights are protected throughout the legal process.
