NPP internal decisions should not be attributed to Bawumia — Haruna Mohammed

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has urged the public to refrain from linking the party’s internal decisions to its 2028 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stressing that such decisions are taken collectively by the party’s constitutional organs rather than by any individual.

He explained that issues relating to disputes arising from the party’s constituency executive elections are handled through established party structures and should not be portrayed as decisions influenced by the flagbearer.

Speaking on News Digest on Citi FM on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Haruna Mohammed said Dr. Bawumia does not participate in the adjudication of cases or decision-making processes before the party’s National Council or National Executive Committee.

“I’ve heard people dragging the name of the flag-bearer into this. And I want to use this medium to let everybody know that decisions of the party are not decisions of individuals,” he said.

“The flag-bearer is not a lawyer. He’s not a judge. And he doesn’t sit on any case,” he added.

His comments come amid disputes surrounding the NPP’s ongoing constituency executive elections, with legal challenges and court injunctions affecting the electoral process in some constituencies.

Haruna Mohammed said the party remains committed to respecting the rule of law whenever legal disputes arise, noting that elections in constituencies affected by valid court injunctions are suspended until the courts determine the matters.

He cited Assin South and Pungpungpu as examples of constituencies where the party directed that elections be put on hold in compliance with court orders.

“When there is an injunction that is recognized in law, the party gives an instruction for a halt until the determination of that particular matter is met,” he stated.

The Deputy General Secretary emphasised that decisions taken by the National Council and the National Executive Committee are binding on the party and should not be misconstrued as the personal decisions of the flagbearer.

“If anything that is being determined by the National Council of the Party, the National Executive Committee of the Party, to be participated, it is not a decision of the flag-bearer. It is the decision of the party,” he said.

Haruna Mohammed reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to resolving internal disagreements through lawful and democratic processes, stressing that the party would continue to uphold its constitutional procedures and respect the decisions of the courts.
