Nadowli-Kaleo Tops Upper West: A Well-Deserved Honour for Dedicated Leadership and a Call for Greater Unity
The Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly has every reason to celebrate after emerging as the best-performing district assembly in the Upper West Region in the 2025 Public Financial Management Compliance League Table (PFMCLT). The achievement is not merely a ranking; it is a reflection of commitment, teamwork and dedication to improving public financial management and governance.
This remarkable feat deserves congratulations for every individual who contributed to the success of the district. From the District Chief Executive, Madam Mary Haruna, to the Coordinating Director, heads of departments, finance and planning officers, assembly members, supporting staff and the least-ranked worker within the Assembly, each person played an important role in making this achievement possible. Success in public administration is never the work of one individual; it is the product of collective effort.
Special recognition, however, should go to the District Chief Executive, Madam Mary Haruna, whose energetic and hands-on class of leadership has become evident across the district. It is common to find her actively supervising projects, engaging communities and working tirelessly to ensure that government programmes are effectively implemented. Such commitment to duty deserves recognition.
Her appointment has once again demonstrated that it was a well-considered decision. As the only female District Chief Executive in the Upper West Region at the time of her appointment, Madam Mary Haruna brought to office decades of political and grassroots organisational experience. Having served the National Democratic Congress since the formative years of the Fourth Republic in 1992, she possesses a deep understanding of public service, community mobilisation and leadership. Those experiences continue to reflect in her administration.
While this regional recognition is commendable, it should not be viewed as the destination but rather as a foundation upon which even greater achievements can be built. With sustained government support, adequate resources and the continued commitment of the Assembly's workforce, the Nadowli-Kaleo District is well-positioned to raise the bar even higher in the years ahead.
Nevertheless, the district still faces challenges that require urgent attention. One of the most significant is the inability of the Assembly to elect a Presiding Member, a situation that has the potential to slow decision-making and affect the smooth functioning of the Assembly. While differences of opinion are natural in every democratic institution, they should never be allowed to frustrate the collective aspirations of the people.
This achievement should therefore serve as a reminder that development is a shared responsibility. Political affiliations, personal ambitions and individual interests must never take precedence over the welfare of the district. The Assembly can only build on its success if all stakeholders choose dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect over division.
The people of Nadowli-Kaleo deserve an Assembly that works as one united institution with a common purpose. The impressive regional ranking has shown what can be achieved through dedication and teamwork. It is now time for all members of the Assembly to resolve their differences, elect a Presiding Member and move the district forward together.
Congratulations once again to Madam Mary Haruna, the management and staff of the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly. Your achievement has brought honour to the district and set a standard worthy of emulation across the Upper West Region.
Contributing to societal change is what drives me to keep writing.
