GAC raises alarm over rising HIV infections among homosexuals in Bono Region
The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, has expressed concern over the high rate of new HIV infections among homosexuals in the Bono Region, revealing that the group's HIV prevalence currently stands at 26 percent.
According to him, the figure means that 26 out of every 100 homosexuals in the region are living with HIV, making the group one of the most vulnerable populations in the fight against the virus.
Speaking to journalists in Sunyani, Mr Bambilla also disclosed that HIV prevalence among commercial sex workers in the region is six percent, describing the infection rate among key populations as a major public health concern.
He explained that both homosexuals and commercial sex workers remain at heightened risk of contracting HIV, prompting the Ghana AIDS Commission to intensify the distribution of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to vulnerable groups.
Mr Bambilla described PrEP as a highly effective medication that significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection when taken as prescribed.
He also encouraged people living with HIV to adhere strictly to their treatment, noting that consistent use of antiretroviral medication for at least six months can achieve viral suppression.
According to him, Ghana has attained an 89 percent viral suppression rate, a milestone that significantly reduces the likelihood of people living with HIV transmitting the virus to others.
"The medication is working effectively, and we are also using treatment as a prevention strategy," Mr Bambilla said.
He reiterated the need for sustained public education, regular testing, early treatment and increased access to preventive interventions to help curb the spread of HIV, particularly among high-risk populations.
