Alleged $8 million romance scam suspect Abu Trica extradited to United States
Ghanaian national Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has been extradited to the United States to face charges in connection with an alleged US$8 million romance fraud scheme.
Sources familiar with the matter told Citi News that Abu Trica was flown out of Ghana on Thursday, July 9, aboard Delta Airlines flight DL157.
His extradition follows a ruling by the High Court in Accra on July 2, which approved a request by United States authorities for his surrender to stand trial for his alleged involvement in the international romance scam.
Before the extradition, his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, disclosed that his client had reportedly been transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra and expressed concern over being unable to gain access to him.
According to the lawyer, repeated efforts to locate or meet with Abu Trica before the extradition were unsuccessful, raising questions about whether his client had been afforded adequate legal access during the process.
Abu Trica had been in custody since December 2025. Earlier this year, the Accra High Court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after he had spent several months in detention.
However, the court subsequently approved the extradition request, clearing the way for his transfer to the United States, where he is expected to face prosecution over the alleged fraud offences.
