Bekwai MP blasts govt over worsening sanitation crisis, calls for immediate action

Ralph Poku-Adusei, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency, has criticized the government over what he describes as the deepening sanitation crisis in Ghana, urging authorities to take swift and decisive action to rescue the struggling sector.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the Bekwai legislator said the country's sanitation sector continues to suffer from chronic neglect despite the Environmental Sanitation Policy clearly assigning waste management responsibility to the government.

According to Ralph Poku-Adusei, the sector is burdened by chronic underfunding, delayed payments to Environmental Service Providers, expired service agreements, and an acute shortage of proper waste disposal infrastructure, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.

He maintained that although citizen-led clean-up exercises are commendable, volunteerism alone cannot replace government's obligation to provide effective and sustainable waste management systems.

The lawmaker therefore called for the immediate settlement of outstanding payments owed to sanitation service providers, the prompt renewal of expired contracts, and increased investment in modern landfill sites and waste treatment facilities.

He further advocated for the adoption of circular economy models that would transform waste into valuable resources instead of treating it solely as a disposal challenge.

As Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament's Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, Ralph Poku-Adusei reaffirmed his commitment to providing strong parliamentary oversight and championing practical reforms aimed at restoring efficiency to Ghana's sanitation sector.

He concluded by stressing that sanitation must be treated as a continuous national priority rather than a seasonal campaign, insisting that only sustained investment, sound policies, and genuine political will can deliver a cleaner and healthier Ghana.
