Global concern of Social Media any young people
During 2025 government around the world have expressed concern about the effect of social media on young people. Some countries have banned those under the age of 16 from using social media, and others are considering similar measures.
Interestingly, even some teens see the potential for harm posed by social media. Awake reported that a survey conducted in the United States by Pew Research Center, released in April2025,stated that ‘’roughly half of teens (48%) say [that social media] sites have a mostly negative effect on people their age’’
Health experts have warned about the effect of social media on the mental health of young ones. Last year, Dr.Vivek Murthy, then U.S. surgeon general, stated ‘‘the mental health crisis among young people is an emergency- and social media has emerged as an important contributor.’’’
Now the question is, how can parents protect their young ones from the dangers of social media?
These pieces of advice can be helpful;
In view of the risk involved, do not feel pressured to let your child use social media.
Before allowing your child to use social media, ensure that he or she is mature enough to stick to time limits, maintain healthy friendships and avoid inappropriate content.
The reason is that, as stated in the scriptures, ‘’ the shrewd one ponders each step and avoids danger’’.
Secondly making the best use of time will be prudent. Why? If you allow your child to use social media, establish rules on its use and explain how these will help to keep him or her safe. Be alert to any changes in your child’s behavior that could indicate the need to limit his or her access to social media.
That said, instilling Godly fear in these children from home would beef up their choosing and using social media wisely.
