Government declares July 10 and 11 national general cleaning days after June 29 flooding
The Government, through the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, has designated Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods.
The nationwide exercise will be held under the theme, "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods," as part of efforts to restore affected communities and reduce the risk of future flooding.
In a statement issued by the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government said the initiative is intended to mobilise citizens to take collective responsibility for cleaning their communities, protecting the environment and safeguarding lives.
Describing the exercise as a critical national intervention, the statement urged all Ghanaians to actively participate.
President John Dramani Mahama has directed all government appointees—including ministers, chief executive officers of state institutions, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and heads of public institutions—to leave their offices and lead the cleanup activities in their respective communities.
To ensure an effective and coordinated exercise, Friday's activities will involve personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies.
The exercise will be expanded on Saturday when members of the public join the security agencies and local assemblies to continue the cleanup.
According to the statement, the two-day campaign will focus primarily on desilting choked drains to improve the free flow of water ahead of the peak rainy season. Other activities will include sweeping and clearing sand, weeds and debris from major roads and streets, as well as cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational areas and communal waste collection points.
The government described the exercise as both an immediate response to the recent floods and a national call to action against poor sanitation practices.
It noted that indiscriminate littering and plastic waste have, over the years, clogged drainage systems, contributing significantly to flooding that has destroyed property, disrupted livelihoods and claimed lives.
The statement directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to work closely with waste management companies to provide adequate logistics, including refuse trucks, gloves, shovels and other cleaning equipment at designated collection points.
The assemblies have also been instructed to ensure the prompt evacuation of all collected refuse and silt to prevent waste from being washed back into drains during subsequent rains.
The government called on all citizens to demonstrate the spirit of community service and national unity by participating fully in the exercise.
