Police recover GH¢140,000 and AK-47 after Mobile Money robbery at Lashibi

The Ghana Police Service has recovered GH¢140,000 and an AK-47 assault rifle following a robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police said the incident occurred on Thursday, July 3, 2026.

According to preliminary investigations, the victim was driving home from work with a bag containing GH¢140,000 when he was attacked by two armed men riding on a motorbike.

The suspects allegedly opened fire on the victim's vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and the front windscreen before taking the bag containing the cash.

Police said investigations revealed that after seizing the money, the suspects attempted to flee on their motorbike. However, the complainant reportedly returned fire, killing one of the suspects at the scene.

The second suspect escaped, abandoning the stolen bag, which was later recovered by the Police together with the full amount of GH¢140,000. The victim was not injured during the attack.

A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with a total of 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of live ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.

Police also retrieved five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells from the scene as part of the investigation.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy and identification.

The Accra Regional Police Command has since taken over investigations and is pursuing the second suspect, who remains at large.

The Police appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in the arrest of the fleeing suspect by reporting to the nearest Police station or contacting the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

The Accra Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring the safety and security of the public.
