Police intercept 50,000 rounds of ammunition in Upper West, arrest three suspects
The Upper West Regional Police Command has intercepted 50,000 rounds of ammunition being transported through an unapproved route outside Wa, leading to the arrest of three suspects.
The suspects, identified as Alhassan Issahaku, Iddrisu Mashood and Alhaji Issahaku, were arrested on Monday, June 29, after police stopped and searched a commercial vehicle suspected to be transporting the ammunition illegally.
According to a police press release dated July 1, officers retrieved 200 boxes of AA cartridges concealed beneath other goods during the operation.
Investigations are underway to determine the source of the ammunition and identify other persons connected to the case.
"The suspects are in custody and efforts are ongoing to establish the source of the ammunitions and arrest any other persons who may be involved," the statement read in part.
The Police Command commended the officers who carried out the operation, describing their conduct as professional and demonstrating integrity in the discharge of their duties.
"The Command also wishes to assure residents of the Upper West Region that it remains committed to protecting lives and property, preventing crime, and maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for all law-abiding citizens," the statement assured.
