Ghana to transform postal services into digital hubs

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed Ghana’s vision of transforming postal services into modern digital service centres that extend beyond traditional mail delivery.

He announced this during a courtesy call by the Executive Secretary of the West African Postal Conference (WAPCO), Mr Mohamed Lamine Diallo, who was on his first official mission to a member state since assuming office.

Praising Mr Diallo’s leadership, the Minister commended the steps taken to reposition WAPCO.

“Half of the way to fixing a problem is identifying the problem. The diagnosis you have undertaken sets WAPCO on the right path to becoming a stronger and more impactful institution for postal operations across West Africa,” he said.

He also mentioned the importance of regional connectivity, digital payments, and efficient logistics, stating that West Africa must leverage existing infrastructure to improve intra-African trade and integration.

“If we can transmit electricity and internet across borders, then we should also be able to move parcels directly across West Africa without unnecessary detours,” he added.

Mr George assured Mr Diallo of Ghana’s continued support for WAPCO’s transformation agenda and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver a stronger, more innovative, and collaborative postal sector for the benefit of the sub-region.

Mr Diallo, for his part, expressed appreciation for Ghana’s leadership and active participation in WAPCO’s activities and shared his vision of a more dynamic, project-driven institution, stressing the need for practical collaboration.

“We must have fewer meetings and more projects that bring all our postal administrations together,” he said, adding that his ultimate goal is to leave behind “a dynamic regional institution with sustainable programmes and stronger partnerships.”
