Haruna Iddrisu calls for increased budget allocation to tackle flooding
The Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for increased budgetary allocations to strengthen Ghana's response to recurrent flooding following the devastating floods of June 29.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, July 1, Mr. Iddrisu said the disaster highlighted the urgent need for government to prioritise flood prevention and management in the upcoming national budget.
“Yesterday the country witnessed a tragedy of floods,” he said.
“What the Ghanaian people expect this Parliament to do in November and December is to ensure that, in the allocation of budgetary resources, we make adequate provision to deal with these floods.”
The Education Minister urged Parliament to use its oversight responsibility to ensure that the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources receives adequate funding to implement measures aimed at addressing the country's persistent flooding challenges.
He warned that failure to make sufficient financial provision for the ministry would undermine efforts to prevent and respond effectively to future flooding.
