UCC SRC directs students not to pay unapproved hostel rent increases
The Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast has directed students to disregard any increases in hostel accommodation fees, insisting that no official approval has been granted for such adjustments.
In a notice issued on July 1 by the SRC President, Kwame Ntiamoah Ntim, the SRC said it had received several complaints from students over what it described as arbitrary increases in accommodation charges by some hostel operators.
The Council assured students that it was engaging the relevant authorities to safeguard their interests and ensure that any changes to accommodation fees comply with the appropriate regulatory procedures.
The SRC specifically instructed students occupying private hostels not to pay any increased rent under the current circumstances. It further urged students to report any hostel management demanding higher fees without prior assessment and approval from the Rent Control Department.
The Council also clarified that accommodation fees for the University's traditional halls of residence have not been increased.
It therefore advised students to ignore any fee schedules or notices circulating within the halls that suggest otherwise and cautioned them against making payments based on such information.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting students from what it described as unfair accommodation charges, the SRC appealed to the student body to comply with its directive while it continues discussions with the relevant authorities to reach an appropriate resolution.
