Deputy Interior Minister reaffirms Ghana’s stable security amid regional threat

The Deputy Minister for the Interior, Mr. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has assured Ghanaians that the country’s security situation remains stable despite evolving security challenges across the West African sub-region.

Speaking on the conference sub-theme, “The State of Security in Ghana and the Sub-Region,” at the opening of the 2026 Annual National Labour Conference in Ho, Mr. Terlabi said Government continues to implement strategic measures to safeguard national peace and strengthen the country’s resilience against emerging security threats.

He stated the inseparable link between security and national development, describing Ghana as a beacon of peace and stability within the sub-region.

The Deputy Minister said Government is enhancing national security through strengthened border surveillance, improved intelligence gathering and ongoing reforms in firearms administration and the regulation of the private security sector.

According to him, enforcement against illegal possession and circulation of firearms has been intensified following the successful implementation of the Gun Amnesty Programme, as part of broader efforts to reduce the proliferation of illicit weapons.

Mr. Terlabi further highlighted key legislative reforms aimed at modernising Ghana’s criminal justice system. These include the Community Service Bill and the proposed Parole Bill, which are expected to strengthen offender rehabilitation, reduce congestion in correctional facilities and promote more effective administration of justice.

He noted that the reforms form part of Government’s commitment to building a modern, efficient and humane justice system while enhancing public safety and national security.

The Deputy Minister called on organised labour to play an active role in preserving Ghana’s peace by promoting vigilance, social cohesion and responsible citizenship in workplaces and communities.

He emphasised that safeguarding the country’s peace and security is a shared responsibility and urged all citizens to remain united in supporting national efforts to address emerging security challenges.
