Heavy rainfall washes away culvert on Agona Kwanyarko–Akotsi Road, motorists stranded

Last Monday's heavy rainfall caused the collapse of a culvert bridge over a stream along the Agona Kwanyako to Gomoa Akotsi road, the Agona East District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), ACDCO Seth A. Williams, has announced.

According to the District Director, the NADMO Directorate received a distress call from residents of Agona Suromanya, a community along the Agona Kwanyako to Gomoa Akotsi road, reporting that heavy rainfall had caused severe flooding on a section of the road within the community.

“Upon receiving the information, I and the management team immediately mobilised staff stationed at Mankrong Nkwanta and Kwanyako to respond to the emergency.

"The response team arrived promptly at the scene and observed that the culvert through which rainwater normally passes had been severely eroded. As a result, large volumes of water overflowed the culvert and spread across the road, making it impassable for vehicles.

"The flooding disrupted the movement of motorists and pedestrians, leaving several vehicles stranded on both sides of the affected road. Residents and commuters were unable to continue their journeys due to the high volume and strong current of the floodwater.

"Together with some volunteers from the community, we assisted pedestrians to cross the flooded section safely to the opposite side of the road. The team also monitored the situation, educated road users on safety precautions, and advised motorists not to attempt to drive through the flooded section until the water level subsided.”

Speaking to the media, ACDCO Seth A. Williams said the incident has disrupted transportation for motorists and residents of Agona Suromanya and surrounding communities. He appealed to the Agona East District Assembly, on behalf of the affected communities, to urgently rehabilitate the damaged section of the road and reconstruct the eroded culvert.

“This will restore the free flow of stormwater, improve road accessibility, and prevent similar incidents during future rainfall events.

"I also appeal to the Regional and National Executives of NADMO to adequately resource the Agona East District NADMO, especially regarding our daily movement and activities, to enhance effective service delivery to the people in our catchment area,” ACDCO Seth A. Williams stressed.
