MCE warns against unauthorized building structures on waterways amidst widespread flooding

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Hon. Sebastian Obeng, has warned owners of unauthorised dumping sites and structures on waterways to regularise their permits or risk having their facilities demolished.

The warning follows recent flooding in parts of the municipality.

The MCE’s stance comes after a recent hour-long downpour that submerged homes, destroyed properties, and displaced several families.

Hon. Obeng issued the caution after touring the affected areas to assess the extent of damage caused by the heavy rains.

Speaking to the media, he described the situation as very disturbing.

He attributed the disaster to severe flooding caused by dumping and unauthorized building activities that obstruct natural waterways.

The flooded areas, which have been occupied by encroachers, serve as critical waterways. The MCE observed this and strongly stated that operators within such areas would be decisively dealt with if they fail to regularize their permits.

Hon. Sebastian Obeng confirmed that the Assembly has received multiple reports regarding encroachment on waterways.

He assured the public that the Assembly is committed to preventing further disasters and noted that several illegal developers have already defaulted on regulations.

He stated unequivocally that all unauthorized buildings within waterways will soon be demolished before the situation escalates further.

Hon. Obeng also advised developers to strictly adhere to building codes and desist from erecting structures on waterways and other restricted areas.

He further warned that the Assembly would not hesitate to demolish any non‑compliant structures if the right procedures are not followed.
