Flood crisis: 'We didn't elect you to tell us our problems; fix them' — Sammi Awuku tells Mahama
The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Awuku, has criticised the John Dramani Mahama administration over its handling of the country's recurring flooding.
He urged the government to focus on delivering solutions instead of explaining the causes of the disaster.
His remarks come after heavy rains on Monday, June 29, triggered flooding across several parts of the country, particularly Accra, leading to deaths, destruction of property and widespread disruption to movement.
Following an aerial inspection of the affected areas, President John Dramani Mahama attributed part of the flooding to changing climatic conditions and human activities.
The President said illegal structures built on waterways and poor environmental practices continue to worsen the situation.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, Sammi Awuku argued that Ghanaians expect leadership that responds decisively during national emergencies rather than public explanations of the problem.
He also accused the government of politicising flooding while in opposition and failing to demonstrate the leadership needed now that it is in office.
According to him, several drainage and flood mitigation projects were initiated by the previous New Patriotic Party administration and should be continued.
"We didn't elect leaders to tell us our problems; we elected leaders to fix our problems. If President Mahama is tired, he can leave the position for somebody who is also ready to lead us to that promised land," said the lawmaker.
