Floods: PURC monitors power outages as ECG, GRIDCo work to restore supply
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says it is closely monitoring the power outages affecting parts of the Greater Accra Region following heavy rains that caused flooding in several areas.
The disruptions come after floodwaters affected critical electricity infrastructure, leading to power supply interruptions in a number of communities.
The Commission said it is working with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to ensure that power is restored to affected areas as quickly as possible.
"The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) wishes to inform the general public that it is closely monitoring the ongoing power interruptions by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a result of the heavy down pour," the Commission said in a statement issued on Monday, June 29.
According to PURC, the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations have been shut down following consultations with the utility providers due to severe flooding at the facilities.
The Commission explained that the decision was taken as a safety measure to prevent the loss of lives and protect both personnel and equipment.
PURC said its independent technical teams have been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and remain in constant contact with the service providers to facilitate the restoration process.
"For the sake of public safety and the prevention of loss of human life, the Commission in consultation with the service providers has agreed to the shutting down of Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations, which have become severely flooded and dangerous to operate," the statement added.
The Commission acknowledged the frustrations caused by the unannounced outages and apologised to consumers for the inconvenience to households and businesses.
