Alan Kyerematen offers better alternative to troubled NPP — United Party

The United Party (UP) has called on frustrated supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to channel their votes to Alan Kyerematen, citing the growing internal tensions within the biggest opposition party.

The call comes at a time when tensions are escalating in the NPP over allegations of anti-party conduct involving former flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong.

Some party members have petitioned for his dismissal, with the matter having been referred to the party's disciplinary committee for a decision in two weeks.

The UP said the ongoing disputes within the NPP, including public confrontations among supporters of leading figures, demonstrate a deepening leadership crisis within the party.

“The United Party (UP) is not surprised by the leadership crisis in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has degenerated into fisticuffs and loud shouting matches between the supporters of leading figures in the Party,” the party said in a statement issued on Monday, June 29.

The party said it had earlier predicted that the succession disagreements within the NPP, which it claimed contributed to the departure of Alan Kyerematen, would eventually create divisions within the party.

While acknowledging the difficulties facing the NPP, the UP said its interest goes beyond the party's internal challenges and rather focuses on offering an alternative political direction.

“We will be much more enthused, and Ghana will be the better for it, when the energy of frustrated NPP voters is channelled to a vote for Alan Kyerematen as president and UP candidates as members of parliament,” the statement added.

The party argued that dissatisfied NPP supporters deserve an alternative political home and urged voters to place their confidence in Alan Kyerematen's leadership.

According to the UP, an Alan Kyerematen administration would pursue an enterprise economy aimed at empowering local businesses, formalising the informal sector, strengthening indigenous capital and improving technical skills.

The party also proposed reforms in taxation, education, healthcare and infrastructure delivery as part of its vision for national transformation.
