The case for Nii Armah Ashitey: Experience, balance, and a chairmanfor all of us

Political parties thrive when their leadership reflects the nation they seek to lead. For the NDC, that means recognizing where our strength lies and placing tested hands at the helm.

Greater Accra has been the NDC’s anchor through every electoral cycle. It is also home to the Ga people, whose historical and cultural stake in Accra is undeniable. Yet the National Chairmanship has not fully carried that perspective to the head table.

Nii Armah Ashitey changes that equation.
1. A Lifetime of Service to the NDC and Ghana.

Nii Armah Ashitey is not a newcomer. He is a son of Osu-Teshie in the Ga traditional area, born 28 January 1950, and his record speaks for itself: 41eb

- Grassroots to National Office: He served 8 years as Chief Executive/Mayor of the Tema Municipal Assembly from 1993 to 2001 under President Rawlings. He is still recognized as the only MCE for Tema who stayed in office for a full 8 years.

- Parliamentary and Ministerial Experience: MP for Klottey Korle for two terms, 2009-2017. Greater Accra Regional Minister from 2009-2013 under Presidents Mills and Mahama. Then Minister for Employment and Labour Relations from 2013-2017.

- Professional and Trade Union Roots: A lawyer called to the Bar in 1986, a trade unionist, and former CEO of Ocerec Company Limited. He is also a member of the Ghana Chamber of Shipping.

This is experience across local government, Parliament, and Cabinet. He has been in the trenches, mobilizing communities, resolving internal matters, and managing the party’s message at the regional and national level.

2. Greater Accra Deserves a Seat at the Head Table.

Greater Accra is Ghana’s vote bank, its economic engine, and its political pulse. We deliver the numbers, we set the national discourse, and we are home to a vibrant Ga population that has stood with the NDC through every phase.

Nii Armah understands Accra because he is of Accra. He hails from Teshie and Osu. As Regional Minister, he worked on the projects that changed Accra: massive asphalt overlay of roads, access to potable water, health facilities, school infrastructure, and the refurbishment of KIA terminals 2 and 3.

Elevating him corrects an imbalance and signals to Ga citizens and all Accra residents that the NDC values their contribution and trusts their leadership. This is not parochialism. It is balance, inclusion, and strategic positioning.

3. The Temperament and Network for 2028 and Beyond.

The NDC faces critical battles: consolidating our base in urban centers, winning back floating voters, and keeping the party united around social justice and development.

Nii Armah brings exactly that:
- Unity: He has called for unity, saying “Whoever wins the contest, it is the party that has won”. He believes his experience can bring a united front.

- Electoral Strategy: He has been clear that the NDC cannot afford to gamble with 2024 or 2028. He stands on a record of winning Korle Klottey with 50.6% in 2008 and retaining it in 2012.

- Grassroots Commitment: Even after contesting the chairmanship in 2022, he said his doors remain open to serve the party. Recently, he covered nomination fees for Klottey Korle branch executives to remove financial barriers to participation.

A Ga Chairman from Greater Accra is about rewarding loyalty, ensuring the NDC speaks to every Ghanaian in their own context, and deploying regional insight to strengthen structures across all 16 regions.

Delegates, Cadres, and Supporters of the NDC:

The moment to act is here. Nii Armah Ashitey represents continuity with our founding values, deep connection to a vital region, and the hands-on, unifying leadership the party needs to win in 2028 and beyond.

Let us make history together. Let us make Nii Armah Ashitey the next National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.
