GTEC questions dismissal of Bolgatanga Technical University Vice Chancellor
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has expressed concern over the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor of Bolgatanga Technical University Professor Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, raising questions about whether the Governing Council complied with the required procedures before terminating the appointment.
In a letter addressed to the University's Governing Council, GTEC said it had received information that the Vice Chancellor's appointment had been terminated with immediate effect following the submission of an investigative report.
“We have been informed that the Vice Chancellor’s appointment has been terminated with immediate effect following an investigative report.”
The Commission noted that the decision appeared to have been taken despite an earlier directive from the Minister of Education instructing the Council to suspend any action until the report had been reviewed.
“The Minister of Education directed that no action be taken until the report is reviewed and further instructions issued.”
GTEC also referred to engagements involving the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, stating that stakeholders had agreed that no action should be taken until further consultations had been completed.
“A meeting with stakeholders resulted in a clear directive that the matter should be held in abeyance pending consultations.”
The Commission cautioned that the dismissal may not be consistent with the established governance procedures governing the removal of a Vice Chancellor.
It indicated that it would continue to monitor developments and review the circumstances surrounding the decision to ensure compliance with the applicable institutional regulations and due administrative process.
