Ex-convict caged four years for stealing phones from injured road accident victims

Sampson Asiedu

A 21-year-old ex-convict has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment by the Nsuta Circuit Court for stealing two mobile phones belonging to victims of a road accident.

The convict, Sampson Asiedu, was also ordered to pay GH¢5,000, representing the value of the stolen phones, or serve an additional two-year jail term in default.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Francis Agyekum Marfo, is a military officer stationed in Accra who was travelling with his family when they were involved in an accident on the Juaben–Effiduase road on May 2, 2026.

The court heard that Asiedu and another individual arrived at the accident scene and helped transport the injured victims to hospital.

While receiving treatment, Marfo discovered that his two mobile phones were missing. He subsequently called one of the numbers, and Asiedu answered, assuring him that the phones would be returned.

However, after several days, Asiedu failed to hand over the phones and eventually switched them off. The matter was then reported to the police.

Police arrested Asiedu on June 4, 2026, at Juaben.

During investigations, Asiedu admitted stealing the phones and disclosed that he had sold them for GH¢300.

The prosecution further informed the court that Asiedu had previously been convicted and imprisoned for a similar offence.

After he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing, the court sentenced him to four years in prison, taking into account his prior conviction for a related crime.
